A Garden Tour with the Digboi Women’s CollegeBy Kaylin HenryMonday, March 10 - After completion of their exams, students from Digboi Women’s College were invited to Adarsh Seuj Prakalpa for an early morning visit. The program began with "A Canadian Perspective" - a Powerpoint presentation delivered by Tharani Balachandran, Laura Colquhoun, and Kaylin Henry. This presentation introduced Canada's major national industries, such as fisheries, forestry, mining and tourism.
Information was presented about the "Growing Healthy Families" program, and the role Fertile Ground, Rotary and other supporters have had in development of the project . The audience, over fifty young women, showed much interest and curiosity in our cultural perspective. Following a question & answer period, the students explored the garden, including the vermicompost bin (pictured at right). It was a great experience for our hostel mates to learn about our project and why three Canadian students have come all the way to this northeastern gem, Assam. |
We discussed the practices of home gardening, waste management, recycling and urban composting, and the goal of the demonstration garden.
